Luann Martin, LCSW-R
I have over 20 years experience in the human service field. My passion is providing compassionate support for those struggling with life’s challenges in a safe and non-judgmental environment; assisting individuals in addressing what is troubling them; whether it is marital conflict, depression, anxiety, relationship conflict, trauma, anger management, serious mental illness, etc.; helping them to achieve their personal goals; effecting positive change and working toward desired outcomes. I incorporate principles from the Christian faith for those who desire that but work with all people/faiths indiscriminately.
I love working with college-aged individuals; helping them to navigate the difficulties associated with entering adulthood successfully. I am closely located to Canisius, Medaille, UB South and Buffalo State colleges. Public transportation is available: the bus stops in front of the office and the Humboldt/Hospital Metrorail station is a block away.
I also derive great joy in assisting married couples in developing more effective ways of communicating with the end goal of resolving conflict and enjoying a more satisfying relationship where both parties feel valued and connected to each other in a deep way.

Life is hard sometimes! Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, a traumatic experience or a family relationship, counseling is a good place to start addressing those difficulties so you can live a more fulfilling life. I integrate the principles of the Christian faith in my counseling for those who seek that but I’m also happy to engage those from all walks of faith and spiritual beliefs. I enjoy engaging children and their families to help promote happy, healthy family systems and relationships.
I have varied experiences working with children, adolescents and families in the community, in an outpatient mental health clinic and in the Buffalo public school system. I also utilize my training in EMDR therapy to help both children and adults process and resolve disturbing traumatic memories so that they can move forward in their lives.
My hope is that I can provide a compassionate and empathetic space for you to explore the vast array of thoughts and emotions that come with difficult life situations and to work together on finding solutions and peace for you and your loved ones.

Are you feeling stuck in negative relationship patterns, negative thoughts about yourself, feelings of anxiety, or depression? Perhaps you have tried your best to break these belief patterns but haven’t made the headway you were hoping for. Sometimes we get stuck due to challenges life has sent our way. The consequences seem to replay themselves day in and day out in our beliefs of ourselves and our interactions with others.
I use an eclectic approach to therapy based on your needs and specialize in using Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing (EMDR). We will develop coping skills for the here and now; and also seek to understand the root causes of these negative patterns. This will allow new freedom for you to think and relate in a healthy way.
Despite the heaviness of life there is hope. You don’t have to stay stuck in the place where you are. If you would like a support and guide as you navigate through past hurts, current concerns, and anxieties about the future, give me a call. I would be honored to take the journey with you as you seek healing.

Throughout life, every person encounters trauma, relational stress, and other struggles that undoubtedly impact their mental health. The good news is that no one must face life’s ups and downs alone. Spending time discussing emotions, past trauma, and future goals with a caring individual can make a significant difference. As a counselor, I always strive to provide a comfortable and open environment for my clients to engage in discussing issues that are most important to them. I use values from my Christian faith as a guiding influence in my counseling work. I welcome clients of all faiths and spiritual beliefs. I will reference faith/spirituality to the point that my client finds beneficial. I use a guiding approach during my counseling sessions in contrast to a more directive approach. I believe that counseling is a place for clients to explore their own thoughts and emotions about their life with the goal of ultimately making decisions that align with their values. I see myself as a supportive individual helping the client on their journey through listening, reflection, and feedback/advice only when desired.
I have experience working with high school youth, adults, and in an outpatient mental health clinic setting. I am trained in EMDR therapy and can provide trauma reprocessing as a tool for helping clients overcome the current issues they are experiencing due to disturbing memories. I use Motivational Interviewing as a tool to help ambivalent clients develop confidence in making decisions that support their long-term fulfillment.
As an individual, I am inclined to be hopeful, and I try to create a space where clients feel they are able to nurture hope for their own life. This means acknowledging the difficult parts of our journey while affirming growth and strengths when they are evident. Developing coping skills, healthy relationships, and a life that aligns with one’s deeply held values is possible. If you are ready to take a step to work towards healing and growth it would be a joy for me to work together with you as you move in that direction.

Life is never without challenges, but meaning is often found in how we face them and the support we seek along the way. If you are here, you’ve already taken the first step.
My approach to this work could be summed up as very personal and deeply relational. Knowing that no one fits into a perfect box, I take time to learn my clients’ stories and personalities so we can come up with therapeutic strategies that are evidence-based yet tailored to you as an individual. And because we are not meant to do life alone, I also emphasize the importance of family and relational work. Whether family is the one you were born into or the one you’ve built, incorporating these relationships can lead to long-lasting growth and deeper unity.
My own life has led me on a journey with experiences so varied that they could only have been preparing me for this work of humbly trying to help individuals navigate their own unique life challenges. From working in the business world to teaching overseas, supporting people with substance use disorders and those experiencing homelessness, becoming a foster parent and a surrogate, while navigating my own health issues, each chapter of my life has deepened my belief that every person is intrinsically valuable and capable of living a thriving, full life.

Supporting others has been part of who I am long before becoming a social worker and counselor. I work with individuals who feel stuck, overwhelmed, broken beyond repair, those carrying anxiety, depression, life transitions, shame, or the weight of past decisions. Many simply need someone to truly listen. I provide a safe, collaborative space where we work toward healing, self-compassion, and resilience, because even broken crayons still color.
I incorporate CBT and DBT skills to help clients create lasting change. CBT helps identify and challenge unhelpful thought patterns, while DBT builds skills in mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation, acceptance, and healthy relationships. Together, these approaches support healing, resilience, and a more balanced life.
Life can feel heavy, and sometimes you just need someone to truly listen. You are in the driver seat of your journey and I’m here to come alongside you. Together, we’ll build practical skills, healing, and resilience to create a healthier, more balanced life rooted in growth and self-compassion. Please do not hesitate in reaching out

Seeking therapy can be a meaningful first step towards mental clarity and well being, especially during times of stress, change, or uncertainty. I work with adolescents, teens, and adults who are navigating emotional challenges and transitions, and I strive to create a supportive, nonjudgmental space where you can feel comfortable being yourself. My approach is grounded in compassion, collaboration, and respect for each client’s individual history.
I have experience supporting individuals with anxiety, depression, self-image concerns, eating disorders, trauma, pregnancy and postpartum challenges, relationship issues, and major life transitions. I also support clients in strengthening self-worth and exploring identity in a way that feels affirming and empowering.
My therapeutic style is strengths-based and trauma-informed, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Motivational Interviewing to support insight and meaningful change. For those who wish, I also offer faith-based counseling and can integrate Christian values into the therapeutic process in a respectful and client-centered way.
